Think back 50 years. What was Florida like? What would we be today if we knew then what we know now? Would we have designed our cities differently? Would we have built our homes offices and industrial sites? Would our structures be built to withstand hurricane winds, use renewable energy?

These are the questions the Century Commission must ask for the next 50 years. Quite a daunting task but one the 15 members of the Century Commission are up to.

The Century Commission has been asked to look to our future and help map out a future. In the past the Century Commission has taken on subjects such as:

  • Climate Change
  • Performance measurements that over time will show how the State in areas that most affect the quality of life and economic prosperity
  • Ensuring an adequate and reliable water supply for current and future generations
  • Mapping Florida’s most critical natural resources and pursuing new conservation methods
  • Designing sustainable communities and building
  • Making the creation of a sustainable Florida within one generation the central organizing theme for all state public policy and agencies

The most recent activities of the Century Commission are related to the potential for off-shore drilling for oil. As in the past Century Commission will bring the best minds to the table to provide an unbiased discussion.

The Century Commission provides a report to the Legislation annually. In the past, recommendations made by the Commission have been embraced by the Governor and the Legislators and have helped create policies to a sustainable Florida.
